How old is our Yeast strain?
How old is our yeast strain at The Flower Pots Brewery?
Earlier this summer we refreshed our yeast from the original strain first used sometime in the past! We do this every year. We only use one strain in all of our beers and as we use open tanks for our fermentation process, it would be very difficult to introduce another one. So, it got us thinking. How many of you know how long our Flower Pots yeast strain has been around? If is one of the core ingredients in all of our ales, and is a key contributor to the clean taste you get from a Flower Pots ale; Goodens Gold, Pots Bitter, Perridge Pale, Buster’s Best, Flower Pots IPA and Cheriton Porter as well as all of our specials. After the success of “Festival”, we have got Stormchaser, Four Candles and Pastures Old coming up before the year end.
As many of you will know, our beers are characteristically transparent, largely owing to our conditioning methods but also because our yeast flocculates extremely well and has a gentle attenuation – our process is non aggressive. The yeast is easy to top crop from our fermenters which helps us a lot in our small brewery.
So how old is it? Well, we are pretty sure it is 18 years old, but it could be 30?! Either way, it’s doing a great job!!
